What Is a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies are urgent situations that require immediate dental care to stop bleeding, relieve severe pain, treat infections, or save a tooth. Tooth infections and abscesses can become serious if left untreated, so it’s important to seek care right away.

At Mālama Dental, we provide emergency dental care in Long Valley, NJ, to help you get relief and protect your oral health as quickly as possible.

To help determine if you’re experiencing a dental emergency, consider these questions:

  • Are you experiencing severe tooth pain or swelling?
  • Do you have a toothache that won’t go away?
  • Have you chipped, cracked, or knocked out a tooth?
  • Do you notice swelling in your face or cheeks with tooth pain?
  • Are you bleeding from the mouth and unable to stop it?
  • Do you have extreme tooth sensitivity that is sudden and severe?
  • Have you suffered an injury to your jaw or mouth?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, please contact Mālama Dental right away to schedule an emergency dental appointment. We are dedicated to providing gentle, prompt care to help you feel better fast.

FAQ

What if my tooth gets knocked out?
  • Pick up the tooth carefully by the top (crown) — do not touch the root.
  • Gently rinse the tooth with water only (no soap or scrubbing).
  • If possible, place the tooth back into the socket immediately. Gently hold it in place by biting down softly on a clean cloth or gauze.
  • If you can’t put it back in, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva to keep it moist.
  • Contact Mālama Dental right away — the sooner you act, the higher the chance your tooth can be successfully reimplanted.
What if my tooth is loose but still attached?
If your tooth is loose or shifted out of position, contact Mālama Dental immediately to schedule an emergency appointment. You can gently try to reposition the tooth using light finger pressure, but do not force it. We will guide you on any additional steps to take before your visit.
What if I have a chipped or cracked tooth?
If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, call Mālama Dental as soon as possible. Chipped teeth that aren’t painful may often be smoothed or filled later, but cracks can indicate deeper damage.
Follow these steps while waiting to see us:
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help with pain (avoid aspirin).
  • Do not apply pain medications or gels directly to the tooth or gums, as this can harm tissue.
